In 2007 Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals received a legacy totalling £285,000 from the estate of local businessman Spenta Cama.
Mr Cama requested that the money be used for ‘Care of the Elderly’ and the Friends have already agreed expenditure of £220,000 to purchase a wide range of equipment specifically for use by elderly patients both in the Royal Sussex County Hospital and in the local community. Grants include 72 Pegasus Eleganza Electric beds for the elderly care wards, a bladder scanner, specialist physiotherapy, lifting and mobility equipment for larger patients and various items for Dental Services.
Dr Henry Alexander, Consultant in Elderly Care at Royal Sussex County Hospital, advised the Friends’ Executive Committee during the process of allocating the funding.
Friends Vice Chair Dr Charles Turton writes: “I know two things that worry older people particularly are being dependent on others when they are disabled and having trouble with their water works. So I’m particularly pleased that Spen Carma’s bequest is being used to help with both these issues. The power beds enable people to move themselves at the press of a button without having to call a nurse. The bladder scanning equipment will enable rapid diagnosis of difficulties with bladder control on the ward. These developments really will make a difference”.
Spenta Cama was born in November 1908 and died aged 92 in May 2002. He was a property developer and passionate cricket fan and served as President of Sussex County Cricket Club from 1980 – 1983.
Coincidentally, Ann Ewens, who works in the Friends Shop, knew Mr Cama.
She describes him as a tall, debonair gentleman with many friends, who was known and respected in the City. As well as many bequests to local and national charities, Mr Cama provided generous support for local cricket clubs to enable them to improve infrastructure and invest in young players for the future.
